If the workaround you tried before isn't working, easily over the Times paywall using Google as proxy server. While you're at the Times web page, delete all URLs that begin immediately after the ? (question mark).

The final solution can be found in Google search. Copy-paste the complete title, or the URL of any NYT article to the Google search box and then click for the top result. There's the daily limit of 5 articles you can browse through Google in addition to the monthly free limit.
